Marilyn Joy Jones Cope, 77, of Amarillo died Tuesday, September 1, 2020.

Services will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, September 4, 2020, at Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel, with Pastor Greg Corona officiating. Burial will be at Dreamland Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Marilyn was born on October 27, 1942, in Hereford, Texas to Elsie Andrews Jones and Elmer Jones. She grew up in Hereford and the Frio community surrounded by loving family, including her cousins – who were some of her first friends and among her closest friends later in life as well. She graduated from Hereford High School in 1961 and completed cosmetology school before beginning a successful decades-long career as a stylist. She was a loving mother to three sons, and devoted wife to Wayne Cope, whom she married on July 24, 1982. Together they enjoyed traveling in their RV, running Palo Duro RV Park for a number of years, and later spending winters in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas with a fun community of fellow travelers. Marilyn also enjoyed bus tours and cruises with family and friends – she was always on the go and up for adventure.

She had a great appreciation for beauty in all forms and expressed it in her oil paintings, her love of dancing, her fabulous style, the affinity for flowers and gardening she shared with her son, Sheldon, and most of all in her genuine enthusiasm for the people and places she loved. A true social butterfly, Marilyn had a knack for bringing light and love to everyone she encountered – as a volunteer at the BSA hospital gift shop, as an active member of Hillside Christian Church, and as a core member of the Widowed Persons Services group.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Wayne.

Survivors include her sister, Patsy Findley of Amarillo; three sons, Sheldon Johnston and life partner Jay Youree of Amarillo, Shawn Johnston and wife Kim of Amarillo, and Trae Johnston and wife Shauna of Amarillo; two step-daughters, Denise Van Meter and husband Rex of Amarillo, and Susan Hill and husband Bob of Fort Mill, S.C.; a step-son, Bill Cope and wife Michelle of Bloomington, Ill.; 12 grandchildren, Skyler Johnston and wife Raven, Kaycee Cox and husband Jordon, Kole Johnston, Brooklyn Johnston, Lauren Kreusel and husband Joshua, Luke Johnston, Bryan Van Meter and wife Kenna, Cara Van Meter, Lea Queener and husband Cal, Nathan Rodriguez and wife Amanda, Taylor Cope, Tucker DeWitt and wife Hannahlea; eight great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and wonderful friends.

The family will receive friends from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, September 3, 2020, at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home.

Memorials may be sent to BSA Hospice of the Southwest, 5211 SW 9th, Ste. 100, Amarillo, TX 79106.
