Martha “Sos” Mortara, age 84 of Amarillo, Texas, peacefully died on Thursday, November 19, 2020 from complications associated with COVID-19.

A proud Argentine until the very end, Martha was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina on August 6, 1936. Martha shared her childhood with her beloved “Hermanito”, Juan Carlos, and her sister Ana.

In 1952, Martha Married Felix Mortara, and they had three children, Belinda, Erik, and Roger. Martha and Belinda shared a special bond that grew even greater in 1990, when Martha moved from New Orleans, LA to Amarillo, TX to be closer to her daughter and new granddaughter. Martha’s greatest joy in life was her family, which was evident as soon as you met her. She always had a story about her children (her “babies”) and her grandchildren (her “other babies”). Martha was known for her radiant smile, her great sense of humor, and unremitting positivity. Martha also enjoyed the simple things in life like chocolate, coffee, animals, Roy Orbison, classic movies, tiny trinkets, and of course, her Argentine heroes Lionel Messi and Manu Ginobili.

Martha spent much of her life traveling the world and living in multiple countries. From Argentina, to Angola, to Canada, to the USA, she easily made friends in every place she called home. Multilingual since childhood, Martha fluently spoke Spanish, French, Italian, and English. Her many experiences across a variety of cultures helped lend to her loving, accepting nature of all people across all walks of life. Martha built her career in retail, working tirelessly for over 50 years to best serve her beloved clients that predictably became her friends.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Belinda and Dennis Skelton of Amarillo, TX, her son and daughter-in-law, Erik and Toni Mortara of Kiln, MS, her son, Roger Mortara of Lacombe, LA, her grandchildren, Lauren Auzenne and her husband JW, Michelle Mortara, Bruce Mortara and his wife Robin, Jennifer Creson, and Katina Knight, her brother Juan Carlos Mortara and his wife Cristina, and multiple great-grandchildren and nieces. She will be very deeply missed.

A private memorial date is pending upon the state of the current pandemic.

Her family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff at BSA, particularly nurse Ari, who provided exceptional care for Martha during her time spent in palliative care.

In lieu of flowers, her family welcomes donations to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Humane Society.

  1. Dennis, I am so sorry I am just now seeing this. I appreciate you reaching out to me. My mom was very fond of you. It has been very difficult without her as we were so close, but she had dementia and her final months she was getting worse. However, she always knew who I was.
How are you? Are you still living in New Orleans?
    Thanks again,
    Belinda
