Michael Gene Cates, 70, of Conroe, TX passed away on January 27, 2022.

Memorial services will be at 4:00 P.M., Tuesday, February 1, 2022, in the Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Michael was born in Amarillo, TX on March 15, 1951, to Mary Lou and Gene Cates. He graduated from Tascosa High School in 1970.

Mike loved to fish and spend time outdoors. Trout fishing in the mountains was his favorite summertime vacation spot. He enjoyed watching old movies and woodcarving in his idle time. His family was his priority. he loved his wife Sheri of 47yrs very much. His three sons were his pride and joy.  He was and always will be their hero. He considered his grandchildren as his bonus in life and was proud to be their Papaw.

He was a strong and hardworking man. He worked in the horticulture and landscaping business most all of his life. he worked as foreman at Love and Son’s nursery for 30+ years and worked with other nurseries as well.

On June 7, 1974, he married Sheri Marr in Amarillo, TX.

Survivors include his wife, Sheri Cates, of Conroe, TX; sons, Michael Cates Jr. and wife Amanda, of Amarillo, TX, Christopher Cates and wife Stephanie, of Amarillo, TX, and Dennis Cates, of Amarillo, TX; sister, Cathy Cochran, of Amarillo, TX; brother, Sammy Cates, of Clarksville, TX; grandchildren, Jordan Cates, Michael Cates III, Colby Cates, Shyanne Cates, Riley Lynn Cates, and Abel Cates; and great-grandchildren, London Cates, and Braylen Cates.

  3. My prayers for your family. I was your cousin, but I when we were kids, I felt like a sister. Probably because I practically lived at your house. Lots of good memories and a few “boys will be boys” memories. Blowing up Barbies with black cats, drawing faces on dolls with permanent marker. I loved you. Say hi to mom and dad in heaven.

  5. Sheri and family, we never had the pleasure of knowing you or your family but Mike and I were cousins. I’m sorry for your loss. We know all to well what it’s like to let someone go. Just know he is at peace and it will take time for you to adjust your life . I pray for peace and mercy for your family.

  8. I am SOOOOOO broken hearted. Have known Mike for many many years and he was a very good man!! He will be truly missed but have lots of memories. My prayers go out to his family.
