Michael James Culwell, 71, of Amarillo, TX passed away on November 16th, 2021.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, December 20th, 2022, in the Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount Blvd in Amarillo, TX. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors.

Michael was born on May 8th, 1950, in Amarillo, TX. He grew up working on the family farm/ranch and graduated from Tascosa High School in 1968. He attended The University of Oklahoma in Norman, OK and earned a BBA in 1972. While attending the university, he made countless friends as a member of the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity and was also a member of the OU Rifle Team. Most importantly, he met his wife, Nancy Culwell. They were married on May 20th, 1972 in Mangum, OK. In 1975, Michael earned his J.D. from Oklahoma City University and later that year moved back to Amarillo with his wife Nancy to take over the ranch operation. He passed both the Texas and Oklahoma Bar Exams within a year and was very proud of that accomplishment. He maintained an active status with the Texas Bar Association and continued his career in ranching throughout the majority of his life. He took great pride in being a cowman and a lawyer. Michael had a great sense of humor. He really enjoyed time with his friends/family, OU football, hunting/fishing, arrowhead collecting, and watching bad westerns. He made contributions to the Panhandle Plains Historical Museum, The Westerners, numerous shooting sports organizations, and was a Founding Member of NRA Whittington Shooting Center as well as an NRA Life member.

Michael is greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by his wife Nancy, who passed away in 2015.

His survivors include his son, Chris Culwell and his wife Jamie, along with their son Cal, who loved his “Poopaw” very much.
