Michael “Mike” Powell

Michael “Mike” Powell went to his Lord on April 27, 2023.

Memorial services will be at 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, May 2, 2023 at First Baptist Church Chapel with Dr. Howard K. Batson, officiating.  Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Mike was born on February 18, 1936, in Fort Worth, Texas to Edison and Eureka Powell.

Along with his older brother Jack, the family moved to Amarillo in 1940.  He attended Amarillo schools and graduated from Amarillo High School in 1954.  Mike attended Amarillo College and then enlisted in the National Guard.  He was a life member of First Baptist Church in Amarillo.

Mike married Lavina “Kay” Bledsoe in 1958 at the First Baptist Church in Amarillo.  The first few years of marriage they lived in California while he was in the National Guard.

He started working with Southwestern Bell while he was in high school.  Upon leaving the service he continued working for Southwestern Bell.  This was the only job he had for 45 years.

Mike was an excellent artistic wood carver.  His specialty was carving Santa Claus’s.  Over his life, he carved 400.  He could see a scrap of wood and carve by hand and hand detail painting.

Mike and Kay had two sons, David Michael Powell born in 1960 and Patrick Edison Powell in 1961.

Mike’s beloved Kay passed away in 2004.

He was blessed with a second wonderful woman, Anne Reid, whom he married in 2006.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Kay Powell, second wife Anne Reid Powell, and his son, David Powell.

Mike is survived by his brother, Jack Powell; son, Patrick Powell; daughter-in-law, Becky Powell; three grandsons, Brandon Webb and wife Shasta, Michael Webb, and James Powell and wife Bradyn; three great-grandchildren, Marlee Webb, Owen Powell, and Ethan Powell; two nieces, D’Anne Suber and husband Bill and two great-nieces; Kendall Evans and husband Michael and two great-nephews; three nephews, Mitchell, Michael, and Matt Sprowso and families.  He also had the blessing of Anne’s children, Celeste Couture and husband Bill, Branch Reid and wife Linda, and Shannon Caldwell and husband Jack; eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

To all he was simply “PeePaw”.  He left us as he lived.  A loving heart, arms big enough to hug everyone and morals we all could learn from.  His imprint on all our lives will be greatly missed.

“When a great man dies, for years the light he leaves behind, lies on the paths of men.”

– Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
