Nancy Sue (Moore) Skaggs

Nancy Sue (Moore) Skaggs, 85, of Adrian, TX died Saturday, February 4, 2023.

Nancy was born in Amarillo on September 6, 1937, the second daughter of Raymond Lester and Clara Ella (Harmon) Moore, both of whom preceded her in death. Nancy’s sister, Patrica Rae (Moore) Tomberlin, with whom Nancy shared a lifelong and close bond, also preceded her in death.

Nancy graduated from Amarillo High School in 1955. After a brief detour for beach life in California, Nancy returned to Amarillo and soon thereafter met the love of her life, Grady Stephen Skaggs, whom Nancy married on July 25, 1958. A few years later, Grady and Nancy moved to Adrian where they built their home, farmed, raised their family and engaged deeply in the community. As a wife, mother, gardener, home chef, Cub Scout leader, Sunday School and substitute teacher, traveler and square dance partner, Nancy rarely, if ever, approached a task without a spirit of fun and joy.

Nancy will be remembered deeply by her adored husband, Grady, with whom she shared an exceptional marriage of more than 64 years. Also surviving her are their four children: Stephen Skaggs and his spouse, Jay Kleine, of Austin; Susan Skaggs of Dallas; Raymond Skaggs and his wife, Betty, of Adrian, and their son, Joshua, and his wife, Haylee, of Vega along with their children (Nancy’s great-grandchildren), Brooklyn and Jarrett; and Thomas Skaggs and his wife, René, of Eatonville, Washington, and their daughters, Taylor and Avery. Nancy’s niece and nephews (Patricia’s children), Mary Ellen Fine, James Tomberlin, Jr. and Joseph Tomberlin, and their collective children also survive Nancy.

Nancy epitomized graciousness with a wry touch of dry wit, which was often evident in her entertaining stories. And though Nancy’s over 15-year struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease diminished her ever present sense of humor, she remained loving and ready with an unexpected quip until the end. Her family celebrates the wonderful and abundant life she lived for her entire 85 years, rejoices in remembering her loving and kind spirit, and honors her sustaining and abiding commitment to family, church and community.

Besides Nancy’s total devotion to her family, she always remained a good friend. Nancy maintained a lasting and connected friendship of more than 60 years with her dear “sisters” who formed the Birthday Club, a collection of close friends from Amarillo High School.

The Skaggs Family expresses their sincere appreciation to the staff of The Reserve at Amarillo and Kinder Hearts Hospice of Amarillo, who served as Nancy’s principal caregivers for the past three years. In addition, the Skaggs Family thanks Morris Lee Blankenship for providing weekly taxi service for Grady to the Reserve. Thank you all for providing both Nancy and Grady with love and care.

Funeral arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors. The Skaggs Family will hold a visitation on Friday, February 10, 2023, at Adrian Methodist Church, from 10-10:30 a.m., followed by a memorial service beginning at 11:00 a.m. A graveside service will follow thereafter at Memorial Park Cemetery in Vega, where Nancy will be laid to eternal rest.

Farewell thy beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, friend and disciple of Christ, Nancy Skaggs. You shall remain forever in our hearts.
