Nicholas S.L. DeVito, 100, of Amarillo, TX died Monday, July 24, 2023.

The family will receive friends from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m., Friday, July 28, 2023, at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Nicholas S. L. DeVito was born in Cohasset, MA on December 17, 1922, to Ferdinand and Maria Stella DeVito.  In his youth, much time was spent at the beach with his siblings.

Unable to swim, he would search for and collect beach glass.

In 1942, he joined the Army Air Corp and was eventually stationed at the Amarillo Air Base as a propeller mechanic.  While stationed there, he met Frances Slutz, “the most wonderful woman in the Texas panhandle,” at a USO dance.  They married on September 23, 1945, and Nick was thereafter a Texan.

He spent the majority of his work life at The Helium Plant.  For Nick, family and church life were of utmost importance.  From PTA board, playing St. Nick, cooking numerous spaghetti dinners at church, or umpiring girls softball games, he was always where his family was.  He also had a sense of humor.  He like to tell people his middle initials stood for “sweet lips.”  Or, when asked how he and Frances stayed married for 73 years, he would say he always had the last word, “yes ma’am”!  Nick played games of all kinds with friends and family.  Some of his favorites were pinochle, cribbage, and 42.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and three siblings, Jimmy, Fanny, and Tilly; also by his wife, Frances; son, Louis DeVito; and son-in-law, Gary Schweitzer.

Nick is survived by a son, Mark DeVito and wife Vicki; and daughter, Kathy Schweitzer.  He is also held in the hearts of his six grandchildren, Lydia and husband Aaron, Andrew and wife Heidi, Kate and husband Mark, James and wife Emily, Anna and husband Jose, and Jacob, as well as 11 great-grandchildren, Journey, Jakson, Madyson, Ashlynn, Mercy, Jude, Annabelle, Joey, Louis, Eliyanah, and Luke.  There are many loving nieces and nephews as well.  We will all continue to carry his love for us.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Christian Relief Fund, PO Box 19670, Amarillo, TX 79114.
