Nicks Val Fariss, 87, of Buda, Texas died Thursday, December 1, 2022.

Services will be at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, December 7, 2022, in Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel with Danny Logan officiating.  Burial will be at Parkland Cemetery in Plainview, Texas.  Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Nicks was born on February 14,1935, in Grandview, Texas to Katie Lee and Carl Jones Fariss.  He attended school in Dawson County and graduated from Dawson High School. He attended Texas Tech and Sul Ross University and received his bachelor’s degree in business from WT.

He was a veteran of the United States Navy Reserves. He was awarded Navy Honor Man of his recruiting class. After serving in the Navy, Nicks moved to Plainview,TX to work for Pioneer Natural Gas Company. His first day on the job he was introduced to the most beautiful woman in the office.

He married that woman, Emma Ruth Standefer, on April 19, 1963. They resided in Amarillo for 42 years. Nicks retired from Energas after working for the gas company for 30 years. He spent the next 30 plus years of his life traveling with Ruth, woodworking, writing and playing music, and doting on his grandchildren.

For years, he was a deacon at Bell Avenue Baptist Church where they were members and an active member of The Lion’s Club.  He volunteered with the Salvation Army; the Gideon’s; and at local nursing homes once a month playing music and singing for the residents.

Nicks was preceded in death by two daughters, Janice Yvonne Fariss and Cheryl D’Lee Kyle.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Emma Ruth Fariss; son, James Fariss; daughter, Kimberly Val Fariss Flinn and husband Michael Shaun Flinn, all of Buda; his son-in-law, Alan Kyle of Austin; and his grandchildren, Tom Kyle (wife, Michelle), Katie Kyle Wilder (wife, Rachel), Jake Flinn, and Emma Flinn. He was blessed to learn that his first great grandchild, Eden Cheryl Kyle, was born on Oct. 8, 2022.

  2. Condolences to the family. From former neighbors and friends. Terasa, our oldest daughter and your Kim are former classmates. Many a ball game was shared and music from Amarillo HS band. Good memories. Thanks for being in our lives.
