Pauline Vella Hilburn Jimenez, 79, of Amarillo, TX passed away on June 15, 2022.

Memorial services will be at 1:00 P.M., Monday, June 20, 2022, in the Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Pauline was born in Lamesa, TX on December 21, 1942, to Martha and Alex Hilburn, of Native American Hispanic origin. She was the last of nine children – as she liked to say, “the last of the Mohicans.”

Pauline was proud of her family and her heritage. She was a descendent of the 17 original Canary Island families who settled in the San Antonio area in 1731. As a reward for settling the New World, the King of Spain honored them with the title of Hidalgo (of nobility), which was to be passed down into perpetuity; further entitling Mrs. Jimenez as a true “Yellow Rose” of Texas. Her great-grandfather, Juan Leal Goraz, was the first alcalde, mayor, of the Villa de San Fernando, before it was known as San Antonio. He played an important role in the establishment of the first civil government in San Antonio from 1731 to 1732.

Pauline worked for and purchased a franchise of Sutphen’s BBQ from 1965 to 1980. She also worked in social work at the Domestic Violence Center where she helped women and their children have a place of refuge.

Pauline married Alex Jimenez in Lamesa, TX on December 7, 1957.

She was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers, Lewis Hilburn, Raymond Hilburn, Eugene Hilburn, Charles Hilburn, Roland Hilburn, and Daniel “Buddy” Hilburn; two sisters, Alice Hilburn, and Celia Hilburn; and a daughter, Teresa Ann Correa.

Survivors include her husband, Alex Alejandro Jimenez Sr.; sons, Roland Jimenez (Dianne), Alexander Jimenez Jr. (Tammy), Ricky Jimenez, and Andrew Jimenez; daughters, Elsa Nolan (Erik), and Veronica Currier (Hector); fifteen grandchildren; twenty-six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.
