Pete Clay, age 81, of Amarillo, TX passed away on Friday, June 18, 2021.

Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 10, 2021, in the Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel.   Arrangements are made by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd., Amarillo, TX.

Pete was born in Clayton, NM on January 1, 1940.  He grew up in Texhoma, OK and then landed in Amarillo, TX where he graduated from Palo Duro High School in 1958.  After high school, Pete became a successful lumber salesman.  He retired from his career in sales with Canyon Drive Lumber.  He was a member at Canyon Country Club where he spent countless hours creating life-long friendships.  Later in his life, Pete would migrate to Mission, TX during the fall and winter months, where he continued to work on his golf game and establish devoted friendships with his neighbors.

Pete will be remembered as a loving father, grandfather, brother, son, and a friend to everyone.  He was funny, quick-witted, and light-hearted.  He enjoyed being surrounded by loved ones and telling stories about life.  He loved everything about the game of golf, especially keeping up with his favorite PGA golfer, Ryan Palmer.

Pete was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Opal Clay.

He is survived by his sister, Kenda Laubhan and husband, Gene Laubhan; two nephews, David and Clay Devore; sons, Jody Clay, Kenneth Clay and wife, Melissa Clay; daughters, Julie Lovingood, Sara Clay and husband, DJ DeBusman; 16 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.

  1. Pete was my brother and he will be missed so much. I will miss his jokes and his weekly phone calls. I have wanted to pick up the phone several times to call him and tell him about what’s been going on and about all the people I have seen in the past 2 weeks. He was truly and one of a kind and he would be so happy to see all the love everyone has shown on his passing, I can hear him laughing
    and smiling and saying “Gotta go” He never sat too long. RIP sweet brother.

  3. I met Pete 6 years ago I had just retired and moved to Seven Oaks He was out walking. His first words to me was” What are you doing son?” And that’s how are relationship started. My tears start filling as I’m typing. Pete was a living Angel to me. We both loved sports & having a good time I adored his stories I loved teasing him especially when it came to women lol! I loved cooking & he loved eating. There is and always will be only One Texas Pete ❤️😎

  4. Pete was a funny as loving person. I had the pleasure of meeting him when I worked at the golf course. He was an amazing friend. Always saying jokes and just making everyone laugh he was also a great dancer. You will be truly missed Pete rip. Texas Pete

  5. Pete was one of most favorite cousins. He was so much fun. Always loved meeting him for lunch at Pancake Station when I ca.e home for a visit. Loved hi. Dearly. Miss him always..never forgotten.
