Raquel was born on September 29, 1968, in San Diego, CA to Joe and Donnah Grooms. Growing up in a military family, they lived in various places including abroad in Japan before settling in Amarillo. As a child, she enjoyed roller skating and playing outside with her two brothers. They would often come home with stray animals they came across; the beginning of a lifelong love for animals. During high school, Raquel excelled in track and field, where she developed a passion for running and continued to be an avid runner throughout her years. Raquel graduated from River Road High School in 1987. Soon after, she met and married her love Troy Roberson on May 27, 1989, in Amarillo.
Raquel started young out of high school as a licensed pharmacy technician, amongst the earliest generation of technicians in the field. She worked in pharmaceuticals for many years before settling later in life as a dedicated mother and homemaker. She never missed a game her son Garrett played, and he participated in multiple sports throughout school. Raquel enjoyed shopping and interior decorating to create a beautiful and comfortable home for her family. She loved animals, especially cats, and was known for rescuing many pets over the years.
Raquel valued her role as a policeman’s wife and showed great strength and courage in support of her husband as he worked in such a challenging occupation. She loved and cherished her law enforcement family.
Raquel is preceded in death by her father Joe Grooms; her twin brother Rodney Grooms; and her grandparents Lucy Barker, Gus and Norma Lutonsky, Juanita “Granny” Lumpkin and Ruth Roberson.
Survivors include her husband of 31 years Troy Roberson and son Rodney Garrett Roberson of Amarillo; her mother Donnah Hood and husband Clayton of Elgin, OK; her brother Kevin Grooms and wife Kristi of Amarillo; her nephew Kevin Grooms II, niece Katelyn Grooms and grand-niece Tinsley Grooms. In addition, her father and mother-in-law Melvin and Sandra Roberson of Amarillo; her brother-in-law Chase Roberson and wife Kristina of Austin; her nephew Coleten Roberson and niece Makaila Roberson; as well as a large extended family of loving and devoted aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
