Raymond Eugene Doherty passed away peacefully on Sept. 16, 2021.  Viewing will be provided by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors on Wednesday and Thursday prior to his service on Friday, Sept. 24, 2021, at First Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m., with Dr. Howard Batson Officiating.

Ray graduated from Southwestern State School of Pharmacy of Oklahoma in 1959 and joined his father’s business at D&S Pharmacy of Amarillo.  In 1962, Budd Karr and Phill Durham joined the D&S partnership which eventually expanded the business to include 4 Amarillo drug stores and a store in Claude, TX.  The D&S chain sold in 1996.  Shortly thereafter, Ray was approached to join the United Pharmacies.  Although planning to retire, Ray worked an additional 11 years with United to fulfill 50 years of serving the Amarillo community as a pharmacist.

As a businessman, Ray is remembered and recognized for fairness and honesty.  He was always the example of a true gentleman with loyalty to all his friends.  Ray was an avid sports fan to include coaching 10 years for Kids Incorporated.  Ray had a passion for golf, belonging to Tascosa Country Club for 57 years, with fond memories of weekly golf games with his buddies Bud Karr, Bill Thomas, Joe Goodwin, Doug Perkins, Bill Scott, Jim Gowdy, Carl Benson, as well as his beloved T Par T partner for 40 years, Dr. Ed Sokolosky of Owasso, OK.

Ray was a member of First Baptist Church of Amarillo.  He was also involved, for several years, in a neighborhood Men’s Bible Study led by Carter Karr.  Ray is survived by his wife Danny Danice Doherty of 62 years, a son John Dee Doherty, and daughters, Darla (Brad) Gammons and Cyd (Dean) Marusak, brother David Dee (Vickie) Doherty, nieces Amber (Ben) Whittenburg, Dana (Ryan) Snell, Katie (Casey) Williams, 8 grandchildren, Shelby (Darrek) Ruthardt, Seth (Sydney) Gammons, Piper Gammons, Braden (Lorena) Marusak, Max Marusak, Currie Marusak, Raelee (Nick) Van Ryn, Kallie Doherty, and 1 great-grandchild Santi Marusak.

The family wishes to express a sincere thank you to BSA Hospice nurses and staff.  The care they provided won our hearts with their extraordinary compassion.  Our sincere thanks are also extended to our private care givers Rhonda, Gracie, and Lili.
