Roy Lee Hunter, 74, of Amarillo, TX, died September 14, 2021, after a lengthy illness.

He was born August 30, 1947, to Frankie Morris Hunter and Bluford Lee Hunter, in Amarillo, TX. Roy graduated from Amarillo High School and The University of Texas at Austin. He had a long and successful career in the oil and gas business, first with Diamond Shamrock Corporation and later with Mewbourne Oil Company.

Roy is survived by his wife, Torrey Gwin Hunter, his son, John Torrey Hunter and his wife Chelsey Ann Hunter, a beloved granddaughter, Graycen Lea Hunter, his niece Cheryl Gros Drohan and nephews R. Michael Gros and Richard A. Gros, and many beloved cousins.

A reception will be held at the family home on Friday, September 17, 2021, from 5 to 6:30 PM.

  1. Roy and I met in elementary school when our moms dragged us to Trinity Baptist.
    We reunited in college at AC as frat brothers and at UT as house mates.
    Roy was one of a kind and an exceptional person .

  2. Roy and I were very good high school friends. I am truly sad about his passing. I wish that I had been able to spend more time with him recently. We praying for Torey and the family.

    He is a cousin to my children Mike Morris & Charona Morris , Robert Morris was their Father . We knew & loved Aunt Frankie , she was the sister to Charlie Morris my children’s Grandfather. Praying for all to find Grace & peace during this time .

  4. It was my great pleasure to work with Roy off and on for 20 years at Diamond Shamrock and successor companies. As land manager he was responsible for relationships w/land &lease owners thruout the TX panhandle &western OK. He knew those folks & their families generations back, and was unfailingly fair & empathetic w/them in negotiating new oil & gas leases. For us co-workers Roy could be in turn irascible and tender-hearted, yet we always knew where we stood w/him. We will miss you Roy!

  5. Roy and I were friends since high school. We spent a lot of time together. In high school and college at Amarillo College. We have not spent much time together in the past 20 years. I will always cherish the memories. Torey i am so sorry. I did not know until i just now saw this obituary.

  6. I worked with Roy over 30 years, and though my relationship with him was based on business matters, I thought of him as my friend.
    Roy had a great perspective on things and I appreciated his thoughtfulness and his way of expressing a sense of humor.

  7. I did not see Roy as much as I should have liked in the years he was married to my beautiful cousin Torrey. He was a delightful and inquisitive man with a wonderful family. He leaves a huge void.
    My sympathy goes out to Torrey and John and Chelsey.

    He was the best landman I ever knew, but was an even better human being. He will be missed.

  9. I am so sad. Roy and I were Frat Brothers at Amarillo College in 1966. Rest in peace and rejoice with the Lord Jesus Christ.

  10. Roy was such a great family man. We have known each other since Alice Landergin. When I was blessed to teach John Torrey our paths crossed again. I will be forever grateful for those years. You are an incredible family in every sense of the word. May God’s peace cover you on this new journey.

  11. Roy was a skilled oilman, a fine husband and father.
    He navigated this last, very difficult period of his life with courage and grace. Two of his hallmarks
    I will miss most were his stories and shooting exhibitions.

  13. Roy and I were dear childhood friends brought together through a lifelong friendship of our mothers.
    There were many cherished memories made with Roy in the innocence of our youth and we were more like siblings than friends.
    May Torey, John and the family be comforted by your precious memories during this time of loss.

  16. Words can never truly say how loved Roy has been in our lives for so long and in such a deep way. He was a one of a kind and a wonderful man! Roy will be missed by all of our family, but never forgotten for he left a beautiful feeling of love, laughter, and joy in all of our hearts!

  17. I am sadden to hear about Roy’s loss. Roy was a very good friend of mine. I thought about him often through the years. Will never forget the times I spent with Roy and Torrey. Roy was a kind person and I will never forget Roy. My Condolences to Torrey and her family.

  18. I was very saddened to hear of Roy’s passing. He, Torrey and I were pretty good friends years back, but my moves around the country took us different directions. I truly regret not stopping by when I was last passing thru Amarillo. My condolences to Torrey and the family.

    I am so surprised to see this obit. It wasn’t too long ago I visited
    with both Roy and Torrey.
