Selma Douglass

Selma Douglass, born Selma Jo McClain in 1948, passed away on December 21, 2022, at the age of 74.

Memorial services will be at 2:00 P.M., Thursday, December 29, 2022, at Polk Street United Methodist Church in the Sanctuary. Burial will be private. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

A lifelong Amarilloan, Selma attended Robert E. Lee Elementary, Horace Mann Middle, and Palo Duro High School where she played the violin in the orchestra.  She then attended Amarillo College and earned a teaching degree from West Texas State University, proudly serving as a cheerleader on both campuses.

The McClain and Douglass families are aviation families, and Selma was no exception. She earned her pilot’s license and, in 1976, competed in the Powder Puff Derby, a women’s cross-country small aircraft piloting competition.

In 1977, she married Stephen Douglass and had two sons, Matthew, and Nathan. She was actively involved in Cub and Boy Scouts as an Assistant Scoutmaster for over a decade.

Selma worked as a medical biller for physician practices and, in her free time, loved cross-stitch and needlepoint. Her social groups included Chi Omega Sorority, PEO, Boy Scouts, Polk Street United Methodist Church Choir and Seekers Sunday School Class, and Palo Duro High School Class of ‘66 Reunion committee.

Anyone who tasted her pralines would tell you they were the best on the planet.

She is survived by her husband, Stephen, her sons, Matthew and Nathan, her sister, Cherry Sanchez, her brothers, Roger and Tracy McClain, 13 nieces and nephews, and 22 grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She is predeceased by her parents, Lendon “Mac” McClain and Christine Ohrvall McClain, her brother, Bill McClain, and her in-laws Eugene Douglass and Janette Glaves Douglass.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Alzheimer’s Association.
