Sharon Lee Whetzel, 77, of Amarillo, TX died Sunday, March 26, 2023.

Memorial services will be at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 4, 2023, at Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount Blvd. with Pastor Rick Black of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating.

Sharon was born March 6, 1946, in Valley City, ND to Harvey and Elsie Ludwig. She grew up in Rogers, ND, where her family lived on a farm. As a child Sharon enjoyed dancing, ice skating and roller skating. While at a New Year’s Eve dance in Sanborn, ND, she met the love of her life Ronald Whetzel. They were married December 5, 1964 in Rogers, N.D.

Sharon retired from Bell Helicopter in 2011 after twenty-four years. She loved to have family and friends around to entertain and cook for. Sharon was one of the most kindhearted people who never met a stranger and welcomed everyone into her home. After retirement Sharon enjoyed being a part of the High Plains Thunderbird Car Club. And once a month bonding with her cancer survivor group of women, the Princess Warriors.

She was preceded in death by her father Harvey Ludwig, mother Elsie Ludwig, a father-in-law Harold Whetzel, mother-in-law Freda Whetzel, a brother-in-law Butch Kracht and a son, Donald Whetzel.

Survivors include her husband, Ronald H. Whetzel, of Amarillo, TX; children, Randy Whetzel and Luci Hayes, of Amarillo, TX, Ryan Whetzel, of Amarillo, TX, and Sherilyn Poteet and husband Chad, of Amarillo, TX; grandchildren, Chantal Whetzel, Shiann Whetzel, Sierra Poteet, Raeleigh Whetzel, , Caitlyn Poteet, Grace Whetzel, Abby Whetzel, and Christian Whetzel; a sister, Connie Kracht, of Gwinner, ND; brother, Rick Ludwig and wife Susie, of Park Rapids, MN; sisters-in-law, Sharon Schimke and husband Curt, of Bemidji, MN, Diane Kracht and husband Bruce, of Valley City, ND; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins who all loved her dearly.

  1. Sharon was such a sweet lady! She was fun to be around and always smiling! Will miss seeing her at car functions.

  2. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family. I will miss mine and Sharon’s chats and all the time we spent together. She was a good friend and a great mother-in-law to my son, Chad.

  3. I loved Sharon so much. Sweetest person with sweetest smile. Enjoyed her at Princess Warriors. Will miss her so much. She fought a long and hard battle, she was so determined. My prayers for the family because I know you all loved her so much and will miss her.
