Our History

A Family Legacy Begins

The history of Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors spans more than ten decades and stretches from the Midwest to the heart of the Texas Panhandle. Feeling called to a life of service and drawn to a profession rooted in compassion and care, Howard Boxwell enrolled in Worsham’s School of Embalming in Chicago, Illinois in the early 1920s. After discovering how well the funeral service industry suited a family business, Howard invited his brother Paul to join him in Chicago.

The two brothers eventually moved west to Greeley, Colorado, where they partnered with a local funeral director. But the vision was always bigger: they dreamed of building something of their own – a business that could involve their entire family. That dream brought them to Amarillo, Texas, where in 1926, they opened the first Boxwell Brothers funeral home at 903 Taylor. Their parents, siblings, and extended family followed, and together they planted the roots of a family legacy that continues to this day.

Growing Roots Across the Panhandle

As the Boxwell family settled into Amarillo, the business quickly became known for its heartfelt service and family-first approach. With all five Boxwell brothers eventually joining the business as they finished their studies, expansion was inevitable. In 1937, locations in Dumas and Stratford were added to better serve nearby communities.

In 1943, the family extended their reach further by purchasing funeral homes in Perryton and Spearman. Alton Boxwell moved to Perryton in 1944 to oversee those locations, continuing the tradition of hands-on, family-led service. These years laid the groundwork for what would become one of the most trusted funeral service families in the Texas Panhandle.

In 1953, the original funeral home moved from Taylor Street into the old St. Andrew's Episcopal Church at 9th and Fillmore Street.

A New Generation Steps In

By the mid-1960s, the second generation of Boxwells was ready to carry the torch. Ivan’s sons, Jim and Mike, joined the Amarillo firm, bringing fresh energy and commitment to the family’s vision.

In 1968, founders Howard and Paul officially retired. Leadership of the Amarillo, Perryton, and Spearman locations was passed to their brothers Alton and Ivan, and the Dumas and Stratford locations were sold. That same year, the Amarillo location moved from Fillmore Street to Virginia Circle, marking a new chapter.

Sadly, shortly after the transition, Alton passed away unexpectedly. Ivan stepped in as sole proprietor, guiding the company forward alongside his sons in Amarillo, while Alton’s sons, Dick and Bob, took the reins in Perryton and Spearman. Though the businesses would eventually operate independently, the spirit of unity remained strong.

During this time, Boxwell Brothers wasn’t just serving families through funerals – they were also a vital part of the community’s emergency care system, offering ambulance services throughout the region until 1970.

Strengthening Foundations

The late 1970s brought formal transitions in ownership. Alton’s sons, Dick and Bob, officially took ownership of the Perryton and Spearman locations, while Ivan’s sons, Jim and Mike, assumed full responsibility for the Amarillo funeral home. Though the branches became independent operations, the extended family maintained a close relationship, continuing to support one another when needed.

As the years passed, the business continued to grow in both reputation and reach. Mike's sons, Bart and Brad, joined the business in 1991 and 1998, respectively. Boxwell Brothers remained a trusted presence in Amarillo, adapting to the evolving needs of families while staying true to their core values of compassion, dignity, and service.

In 2003, the Amarillo location moved once again, this time to its current home on Paramount Boulevard. The move marked a new era of accessibility and modern comfort, ensuring families would continue to be served in a space that reflects the warmth and care at the heart of the Boxwell name.

Honoring the Past, Building the Future

The legacy of Boxwell Brothers lives on through the family’s third and fourth generations. In 2018, Blakely Boxwell Stephens joined the Amarillo team, continuing the tradition started by her great-uncles nearly a century ago. Her presence marks a new chapter for the family and the business – one rooted in tradition but looking toward the future.

In August 2024, longtime leader Jim Boxwell passed away, leaving behind a legacy of service. Mike and his sons, Brad and Bart, continue to manage day-to-day operations. They have expanded their service into new communities, with locations now open in Vega, Claude, Stratford, Panhandle, and a return to Dumas.

From humble beginnings in the 1920s to becoming the oldest same family-owned and operated funeral home in Amarillo and the Texas Panhandle, Boxwell Brothers has never wavered from its mission: to serve families with compassion, dignity, and care.

Each generation has added its own chapter to the story – and together, they’ve built something timeless. At Boxwell Brothers, funeral service isn’t just a business. It’s a calling, a family tradition, and a legacy of love that continues to touch lives across the region.
