William Gene McClain passed away on Monday, November 29, 2021. Born on February 03, 1938, in Amarillo, TX to William Truett McClain and Willie Renison McClain, he lived in Amarillo and graduated from Amarillo High in 1956. He attended Amarillo College in 1959 and played baseball. He was named to the All American Jr. College first team for his play at shortstop. He later graduated from West Texas University in 1963.
A talented athlete, Gene played both football and baseball with his focus on baseball. His love for baseball continued into adulthood where he coached in the Y Jr Baseball Program and became the Y Baseball Program Director.
Gene dedicated his career to the Federal Government with both Helium Activity and then Bureau of Reclamation before retiring in 1993.
Gene will be dearly remembered for his 28 years of service with the Texas Army National Guard. In addition, he participated in volunteer activities including the YMCA and Ussery Roan Texas State Veterans Home.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Marcie, his children, Mickey and wife Stacey, Randy and wife Teresa, and his two grandchildren, Scot and Aron McClain.
Memorial services pending. Final resting place will be at Eagle Springs Cemetery, McGregor, Texas.
We walked many National Guard trails together and I have fond memories of his quite leadership. Many laughs and many good times.
