Gilberto “Beto” Salas Santana- 1941-2021

Gilbert’s journey of life began on January 1, 1941, when he was born to Andres Salas and Hermila Santana in Sabinas Hidalgo, Nuevo Leon, Mexico.  He married Melba Walls on September 2, 1960, in Laredo, Texas. The couple lived in Dumas, Texas before settling in Borger, Texas in 1978. Gilbert worked for Sid Richardson Carbon Black for 34 years where he earned the nickname, “The General” before retiring in 2008.

Gilbert was a faithful servant of the Lord. He found tremendous joy in his family, especially when dancing with his numerous grandchildren. Gilbert was a gifted singer and musician whose instruments of choice were his beloved accordions.  With a flash of his signature smile and the warmth of his infectious laughter, Gilbert made every stranger feel like a friend and every friend feel like family.  Gilbert’s loving Heavenly Father called him home on September 5, 2021, to begin his final blessed journey.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Elvida Salas; and brother, Amado Salas.

Left to cherish his memory and draw strength from one another are his wife, Melba Salas; brother, Armando Salas and wife, Sylvia Salas of Amarillo, Texas; sister, Genoveva Salas; brother, Filomeno Salas; brother, Andres Salas, Jr.; sister, Susana Lopez and husband, Bernado of Dumas, Texas; daughter, Anna Patzt and husband, Pete Patzt from Dumas, Texas; daughter, Rose Goette and husband, Bill Goette, from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; son, Gilbert Salas and wife, Teresa Salas; son, Eddy Santana; son, Richard Santana, all of Borger, Texas; eight grandchildren, Crystal, Kasinda, Jason, Adrian, Bill, Daniel, Anthony, Vanessa; and nine great-grandchildren, Nathaniel, Jordan, Race, Avalyse, Aiden, Adalynn, Evangeline, Adalynn, Issac.

Funeral Mass will be held at 4:00 P.M. on Friday, September 10, 2021, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Borger with Father Shane Wieck officiating.  Burial will follow at the Dumas Cemetery.  Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors of Dumas, 500 N. Maddox.

Viewing will be from 9:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m., Thursday, September 9, 2021, at the funeral home in Dumas, TX , and on Friday, September 10, 2021, at the funeral home from 9:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., and at the church from 3:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
