Amy Marie White Gilbert, 61, of Amarillo, TX died on September 26, 2021.

Amy Marie White Gilbert was born on October 26, 1959, to Jim and Winona White.  She went to walk the streets of Heaven on September 26, 2021, after a long battle with illness.

Services will be Friday, October 1, 2021, at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church Amarillo in the chapel.  Arrangements by Boxwell Brothers.

She grew up on the family farm, east of Amarillo.  She spent many hours riding the medicine bags behind her Daddy on the back of a horse.  She attended Canyon High School, playing basketball for Bob Schneider and graduated in 1978.    Amy was an active life member of the Girl Scouts of America and earned her Gold Award.  While in high school she participated in a BSA Explorer Post which specialized in “clowning”.  Amy’s clown face was registered with Ringling Brothers Circus.

She realized while in high school in Mrs. Harrison’s class that she had a talent and passion for working with young children, having worked as a teacher’s aide at Sundown Lane Elementary.  Amy would go on to graduate from West Texas A&M University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education.  She taught Preschool Program for Children with Disabilities (PPCD) at numerous schools in both the Amarillo and Canyon school districts.  She would return to WTAMU and earn her Master’s Degree in Educational Diagnostician and worked as a Diagnostician for five years with Canyon ISD prior to retiring.

Amy’s daughter, Allison Elizabeth was born in 1986 and was the light of her life.  The two were inseparable.  Amy would be the mom, confidant, “momma bear”, advocate, friend, and role model throughout her life for Allison.

Amy was introduced to Barry Gilbert by Toni Masters Knapp, by the use of trickery.  Amy married Barry in 1990.  Both of them discovering the joys and challenges of a blended family, starting their married life with two four-year-old and a seven-year-old.  Amy always considered Barry’s sons, Jeremy and Stephen her “bonus kids”.  Barry and Amy enjoyed family time, occasional trips, Amy always looking for out-of-the-way places to stay, working in the church, and spoiling their grandkids.  Barry always sought to spoil Amy in every way possible, and Amy would admit that she was spoiled.

Amy showed great grace and strength during her struggles with her medical issues towards the end of her life.  She still was concerned about her family and the care of her home.

Amy was preceded in death by her grandparents, and her father James Monroe White.  And her many pets, especially Phillip her beloved cat.

She is survived by her mother, Winona White, her husband, Barry Gilbert, her daughter Allison, her stepsons Jeremy and wife Emily, Stephen and girlfriend Becky, her grandchildren James and Margaret, her sister Anita and husband Duane Harp, her brother Doug White and wife Donnice, and nieces and nephews, and many cousins, aunts and uncles, and by her very best friend in the whole wide world Angela Ridgway, and many friends and multitudes of children which she taught and loved.
