She and Jackie moved in with her parents, Richard and Anna Groves. There she would remain until many years after they both passed away. In her final 16 years, she lived with her daughter Jackie and her husband Verl Hawbaker.

Evelyn worked for Southwestern Drug in Amarillo for 10 years as a Data Entry Operator. Evelyn liked to square dance when she was younger, and she could draw well but never pursued it. She liked to travel, she enjoyed seeing new places and going out to eat. Her favorite was cheese enchiladas. She drank green tea instead of water, she loved it. Evelyn collected lions most of her life because she was a Leo and she had quite an extensive collection. In her later years, she enjoyed working crossword puzzles and other printable puzzles. She also enjoyed putting jigsaw puzzles together and loved getting them for Christmas.

Evelyn was not one to show much affection, but she loved her daughter, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren very much and tried to help them out however and whenever she could.
