Millie Ganell Burgett, 85, of Amarillo, TX went to be with the Lord on August 4, 2021.

Services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, August 9, 2021, in the Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount Blvd.  Burial will be at Llano East in the Garden of Gethsemane. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, Amarillo.

Millie was born in Dougherty, Texas on November 3, 1935, to Alfred Milton Carmack and Ruby Owens.  Millie married the love of her life, George M. Burgett, on July 6, 1954, in Fresno, California. She always blushed and said she had “the best year-long honeymoon in Hawaii.”

She and George had four children, Millie Elaine Nesbitt, Jenny Michelle Cook, Lee Jefferson Burgett, and Jana Leigh Slaughter.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Burgett; her daughter-in-law, Lisa Burgett; her daughter, Jana Slaughter; son-in-law, Jim Nesbitt; and daughter, Michelle Cook.

She is survived by her daughter, Elaine Nesbitt; son, Jeff Burgett and wife, Brenda; sons-in-law, Bobby Slaughter, and Kenneth Cook; and her sister, Norma Reeves.  She is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Millie was a proud military wife and enjoyed the travel it provided.   She was an avid reader and she and her life-long friend, Paula enjoyed sharing authors with each other.  She was a Girl Scout leader for Elaine and Michelle for many years. She loved to sew, and her favorite clothing was prom and wedding dresses. She was a member of DAR and in her later years, discovered a love for genealogy.   She loved cooking special meals for her kids and grandchildren.  She loved being called “grandmother” and “mawnew” and spending time with her family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the non-profit charity, Safari of Hope, Inc. (safariofhope.com — specifically the sewing center) where “Millie’s Magic” is being made.

  1. Such a shock. Looking for my neighbors obit and ran across this. I’m so sorry to hear about Millie. Loved her and George. After George died, we would compare who had the most grandchildren in our Christmas cards.

  2. Hugs and prayers! Been a long, long time but I sure enjoyed spending time at the house with Jana and the family.

  3. To a beautiful lady inside and out, I’ll never forget the many times you would make the comment wait wait wait. The one I asked Millie what are we waiting for? Your response, the Cowboys. Never a day went by that you brought me much love, thank you until we meet again. Fly high in your new beautiful body, dance and sing; you will be missed but so grateful for your whole body, mind and soul to be complete today. Love to all the family may Jesus allow you to feel her love living on through you God bless!

  4. Elaine and family. So sorry about your precious mom. She was a great friend and I love your family. Love Kenneth and Myrna Russell

  5. Heaven welcomed a sweet angel. She was such a sweet lady and I will miss her dearly. She always had a smile and hug at church on Sunday morning. Prayers and hugs for the family. 🙏🙏🙏❤️

  6. Millie was the truest, kindest and most loving friend I’ve ever had. We were sewing buddies and visited every fabric store in the Maryland/Virginia area! Our birthday gifts to each other every year were long phone conversations in which we exchanged titles of books which were not to be missed, among all our other news. My heart just aches–I miss her terribly–but I know she is reunited with George, Ruby and her girls. That consoles me.

    1. Thank you Paula for continuing your friendship throughout her dementia. She couldn’t have asked for a better friend her on earth. I cherish the friendship the two of you shared, a true friend you are, thanks for being with her up until the end. God bless and hold you tight during this time for you!
