Virginia Anne Barbee, 87, of Amarillo, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 12, 2022.

Virginia was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on February 16, 1934, to Horace and Olive Frisbie.  Her childhood was marked by moves to the cities of Phoenix and Cleveland, with her family returning to Oklahoma City between each move.  She graduated high school in 1951 from Classen High School and attended the University of Oklahoma where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority, graduating in May of 1955.

The day after her college graduation, she began work in Amarillo, Texas as a geological secretary at Seaboard Oil Company.  One particular morning, she opened the door for a young man that had arrived for an interview, and that began a relationship that would last a lifetime with the person that would become her best friend and husband, Bill J. Barbee.

Bill and Virginia were married on March 15, 1958, at Polk Street United Methodist Church in Amarillo.  They have three daughters, Jennifer, Janie, and Mindy.  Bill and Virginia loved their family, and Virginia spent her life supporting Bill and his work, along with their family, as they worked to manage the never-ending demands of life.  They truly loved traveling together, and especially enjoyed their time spent hiking, fishing, and picnicking in Colorado.  At the age of 61, as many were planning for retirement, Virginia became a realtor and worked until May of 2021.

Virginia was preceded in death by Bill, her beloved husband of 60 years.  She is survived by their three daughters, Jennifer Kelley (Ken) of Amarillo, Janie Smith (late husband Curtis Smith) of Amarillo, and Mindy Gandy (Matt) of Memphis, Tennessee.  Grandchildren include Justin Bragg, Jordan Riley Alexander (Michael), Anne Christian Riley, Sarah Bowden (Cliff), Allison Smith, Barrett Smith, Aubrey Day (Kelton), and Mia Gandy.  Great grandchildren include Emory Alexander, Riley Darnell, Chloe Darnell, Logan Bowden, Colton Bowden, and Miles Day.

A memorial service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Amarillo, Texas, at 3:00 P.M., on Thursday, February 17, 2022.

In lieu of flowers, gifts are welcomed to Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2525 Wimberly Rd, Amarillo, TX 79109 or Texas Panhandle Independent Futures Foundation, P.O. Box 1233, Amarillo, TX  79105, www.tpiff.org.
