J. Marion, as his mother always called him, was born April 12, 1931, in Childress, Texas to Jess and Ruby Mitchell.  He passed away peacefully on January 15th, 2022, in Amarillo, at the age of 90.

Marion was a proud member of First Presbyterian Church in Amarillo, TX. His inurnment will be at the church’s columbarium.

Marion spent his younger years in Childress until the family moved to Amarillo.  He was a graduate of Amarillo High School “Class of 49”.  After graduation, he went on to study at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri and West Texas State College in Canyon, Texas graduating with a BBA degree in 1953.  During that time, he also served in the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina during the Korean War. He married Nell Killough and had three children, Kathy, Becky, and Mark. He began his banking career working at the American National Bank as a teller.  It was then that he enrolled in and graduated from the SMU School of Banking. In 1966, he moved his young family to Dumas, Texas where he joined the First National Bank of Dumas as a Vice-President, later becoming President of the bank.  He was an Elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Dumas and was very active in the Lions Club and many other civic and nonprofit organizations.

Mitch married Lucretia Newton Brown in 1976. They, along with her two children, Blake, and Brandi, whom he later adopted, moved to The Woodlands where he joined the First National Bank of The Woodlands becoming President of the bank where he worked until his retirement.  While living in The Woodlands, Mitch served as an Elder of The First Presbyterian Church and was a long-standing member of the Rotary Club, serving a term as President. He also served as a board member of The Woodlands Memorial Hermann Hospital. He meticulously put together the loan packages and was instrumental in securing the financing for building development of The Woodlands Presbyterian Church and the initial campus development financing of Woodlands Church, that has grown to have more than 18,000 in average weekly attendance.

In 2003, he came back to the Panhandle and lived on the family ranch “Crutch Ranch” near Borger later moving to Amarillo where he lived until his death.

Mitch was a wonderful father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.  He leaves a legacy, to those who loved him and knew him, of wisdom, kindness, and faithfulness.  Mitch was a gentle man with an uplifting spirit.  He was a devoted servant to the Lord and his Church, a selfless and caring friend to so many, a loyal leader of and worker for countless Civic and Christian organizations.  Mitch loved music of all kinds, old and not so old.  His ability to make everyone who knew him feel special was a true gift.  Of all his amazing qualities, it was his incredible sense of humor that will be missed the most.  He had a quick wit, was a master of one-liners and had an infectious smile.

He is survived by his children: Kathy Lyons and husband Robert of Amarillo, Rebecca Hanna of Amarillo, Mark Mitchell and wife LeAnn of Borger, Blake Mitchell of Dallas and Brandi Melton and husband Dean of The Woodlands.  Grandchildren: Wesley Wilkins of Dallas, Jessica Cardenas and husband Nick of Amarillo, Shawna Lamb and husband Hegan of Borger, Jake Mitchell and wife Jana of Tatum, NM, Abbie Pitzer and husband Scott of Fort Worth, Mitchell Lyons, and wife Krystina of San Antonio, Brooke Moran and husband Shane of The Woodlands, Breanne Melton of The Woodlands, Shelby Spohr and husband Austin of Dallas, and Austin Mitchell of Dallas Great-Grandchildren: Aidan Cardenas, Kennedy Cardenas, Hazen Lamb, Rylan Lamb, Hollyn Mitchell, Hadley Mitchell, Betty Ann Pitzer, Clay Pitzer, Brandt Lyons, Poppy Kathryn Lyons, Koah Spohr and Willow Spohr.

The family would like to send a very special thank you to the staff of Ussery-Roan, Texas State Veterans Home, for the wonderful care they gave Mitch during some very trying times, dealing with the Pandemic.  They gave him care, love, made him smile and made sure there was always hot chocolate available.

  2. God Bless you, BoBo. I was truly blessed to have you as my father in law for many years. You had the sweetest heart and you are a very special person. My thoughts and prayers are with ALL the family.

  3. What a wonderful man Mitch was!!!!! He always brightened the room with his smile and sense of humor. I feel blessed to have known him. Love and prayers for the family.
