Joe graduated from the former West Texas State University with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. He worked his way through school entirely on his own.  His career started with working four years with Shamrock Oil and Gas.  He then obtained his civil service credentials and began work with the IRS that spanned a career of 37 years.  His work with the IRS placed him in Fort Worth, Odessa, Tyler, Little Rock, Arkansas, Jackson, Mississippi, Lubbock, and finally back to Amarillo where he retired in 2006.

Joe served as a deacon with Churches of Christ in Tyler, Texas, Cabot, Arkansas, Clinton, Mississippi, Lubbock, and Amarillo.  His last three years he enjoyed worshiping with the Monterey congregation in Lubbock where he had previously been a member.  He worshiped with the Central congregation in Amarillo for over 20 years prior to returning to Lubbock.

Joe married the love of his life, Patricia Ann Carthel, on July 31, 1959.  Together they raised three daughters, Darla Renae, Cari Ruth, and Amy JoAnn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Todd Walter McCollum, and grandson, Cody Mangum.
