John Elliott Dawkins, 60, from Placitas, NM, died peacefully in his hospital room Thursday, April 8, 2021.

A private memorial service will be held Sunday, July 18, 2021, 11:00am, MDT, at Los Poblanos Inn in Albuquerque, NM, with the Rev. Dan Carter of Amarillo, Texas, officiating.

John Dawkins was born May 30, 1960, in Amarillo, Texas, to Pattilou Puckett Dawkins and Thomas Elliott Dawkins. He attended St. Andrew’s Day School, Coronado Elementary School, Austin Middle School, and Tascosa High School where he was a member of the tennis team. He graduated from New Mexico Military Institute in 1978. He graduated from Arizona State University with a finance degree. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Amarillo, TX.

John married Sona Newman on July 8, 1989. They lived in Phoenix until they established Tri State Music and moved to Placitas, NM, with their main office in Bernalillo, NM. In time, they developed offices in Tucson, AZ, and El Paso, TX, John developed lasting friendships, was quick with a laugh, and was always a gracious host. He will be remembered for his varied abilities. He could fix most anything and thoroughly enjoyed teaching his sons how to solder, fix cars and motorcycles. John was an amazing father and loved being with and working with his sons. He played the piano, and his friends called him the ”lounge lizard” as he played the piano and sang with his beautiful baritone voice. John most enjoyed their condo in Mexico, where the family could bring friends, water ski, and be at the beach when the fishermen brought in fresh shrimp, and John would be there to cook them right there on the beach.

John was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Elliott Dawkins, his grandparents, Lela Wolflin Puckett and L.H. (Cedar) Puckett, his aunt Nancy Puckett Berry, his uncle Marshall Hunter Puckett, and his cousin, Kyle Berry.

He is survived by his wife Sona, of Placitas, his three sons, John Maxwell Dawkins of Albuquerque, Charles Wolflin Dawkins, and Thomas Waite Dawkins of Placitas, NM. In addition, he is survived by his mother Pattilou Puckett Dawkins of Amarillo, TX, his siblings, Lela Dawkins of Santa Fe, NM, Marshall Dawkins of Amarillo, TX, and Nancy Dawkins of Brooklyn, NY. Also surviving are cousins he loved and adored:  Wolf Puckett of Amarillo, TX, Shelby Puckett of Sugar Land, TX, Brenda Berry of Peterborough, NH, Terry Phenicie of Redwood, CA, Brady Phenicie of Polson, MT, and Jain McClain of San Francisco, CA.

  1. Sona and sons, I am truly sorry to read that John passed away two years ago. Since I left the bank in Placitas, I lost touch with many of my customers, you all included. I was looking up an obituary for another Placitas customer and stumbled upon John’s. I could not believe it. I am truly sorry, he is at peace now. I pray for you, his family.
