Friday evening, March 19, 2021, the world lost an exceptional human being with the death of Kathy Edes.  Strong matriarch, successful businesswoman, adventurer, loving wife, adored mother grandmother, and great grandmother, Kathy leaves a beautiful legacy of love and devotion that will guide her family through their lifetimes. Kathy died with her beloved husband of exactly 56 years to the day by her side.

Kathy was a single mother at an early age, and she struggled to provide for her son, Allen, while working as a bookkeeper at Sears and Roebuck in Amarillo.  Their world changed for the better the day she met Melvin Edes.  Melvin and Kathy fell in love and were married in 1965 and Melvin became dad to Allen.  It was the best thing that could have happened for each of them, and Kathy and Melvin made a beautiful life together over the years.

In 1984, Kathy and Melvin began the adventure of a lifetime, with the opening of Edes Meats.  Their hard work and perseverance made Edes Meats a household name in the Texas Panhandle region, synonymous with fantastic quality and service.  One could always count on seeing Melvin out front and Kathy in her office almost any time the doors were open for business.

Perhaps Kathy’s most cherished role in life was as Gigi, grandmother to her adoring granddaughters, Jordan, and Alexa.  She cherished her granddaughters and showered them with love.  In December of 2018, Kathy’s legacy expanded with the birth of her great-grandson, Reno Hart Demezza.  She was overjoyed by this birth and she dreamt of spending her later years watching him grow.

Kathy was loved and admired by everyone who knew her, and she knew many.  She was a striking woman with great style and hair as white as snow.  You could always pick her out of a crowd.  Kathy took great pride in her faith in God and found immense joy in her community at The Colonies Church of Christ.

Kathy positively touched many lives throughout her lifetime and her legacy will continue on in many ways.  Those of us who loved her dearly will rejoice in the love and laughter we shared with her while she was with us.

The service will be at 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 24, 2021, at The Colonies Church of Christ with Dick Marcear officiating.  Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery.  The family requests that all in attendance wear masks.  Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 23, 2021, at the funeral home.

The family requests that donations be made to the Amarillo Little Theatre, and/or the Church of Christ Children’s Home.

  11. What a beautiful tribute to a truly amazing woman. To Allen, Melvin and the rest of her family and loved ones, I offer heartfelt condolences. May God grant you all peace and comfort.

  12. I knew her as “Kathryn.” She was my eldest first cousin, and was the daughter of (I can say this now) my favorite uncle and aunt. Her folks always had time and attention to spare to nephews (lots) and a niece (just one) no matter what their age or how far separated by distance.

Kathryn lived true to her family legacy. I was still a shirt-tail kid when she went through her first brief marriage and was struggling to support herself and Allen. Once she hooked up with Melvin, things took a brighter road for her and hers. And she made that road brighter and better for the rest of her life, for all of us.

Kathryn, like her folks before her, was an anchor, a rock of stability and order for other family branches that from time to time were undergoing turmoil or grief to some degree or another. She was always there (and I give Melvin lots of credit here) to demonstrate by personal example how adversities can be endured and overcome. And how they can make us stronger rather than grinding us down.

Due largely to my own inattentions and neglect, I lost contact with Kathryn and Melvin in recent years. I greatly regret that, and I have taken a lesson from it.

Kathryn’s life provides a great lesson and example for us; but her passing leaves a lesson for us also, and it is this:

Life, and life’s ultimate conclusion, doesn’t always give us a lot of notice of what is coming next. If you have a person in your life, a friend or family member, who is important to you as an example or friend or confidant, tell that person how important they are to you. Let them know how lucky you feel to have them in your life. You have a bond. Make it stronger.

And stay in touch. Stay in touch.

God bless Kathryn. And may God bless us all.

    Don Johnson
