Nell Patchin, 80, of Amarillo, TX gained her heavenly wings on October 15, 2021, surrounded by her loving family.

Memorial services will be at 10:00 A.M., Friday, October 22, 2021, at Hillside Christian Church in the Chapel, with Greg Corona officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Nell was born to Kay F. and Lillie Smith on August 12, 1941, in Memphis, TX. As a little girl, she was a tomboy who loved playing outside with her dog PeeWee and helping her dad on the farm. She graduated from Olton High School in 1959.

Her dream was to become a teacher, which was fulfilled when she received her teaching certificate in 1963. She taught for 30 years in the River Road School District.

Nell loved God and her church. She was active with the Senior group at Hillside.

She loved her family dearly and was extremely fun-loving.

Nell was preceded in death by her parents, Kay F. and Lillie Smith; sisters, Francis Moore and Vera Hare; brother, James Smith; special friend, Charles Gill; and son, Max Patchin.

Survivors include her daughter, Tracy Johnson and husband Glen, of Amarillo, TX; granddaughters, Morgen, Emorie, and Baileigh Johnson, of Amarillo, TX; one brother, Pac Smith, Hale Center, TX; and many nieces, nephews, and loving friends whom she was blessed to have in her life.

  1. Mrs. Patchin was my favorite teacher 🥰 she was a very special lady to me and so many other students. She taught us to read, and was so kind and gentle.
    I always remembered her, but later on in life, I had the privilege of also being her sister in Christ and when we reunited at Hillside Church. She continued to encourage me and tell me how proud she was of me.
    She was so beautiful inside and out, and made others feel good about themselves and become better people.
    I am happy for her that she is in the presence of the Lord!
    She was loved and will be missed.

  2. I loved Nell she was my 1st grade teacher and she was also my youngest sons 1st grade teacher!!! I also ended up working with her at rolling hills she became a sweet friend!!!! She would always tell me that my sister(i have a twin) and i would make her day when she was my teacher. She was a wonderful teacher and a wonderful friend!!! I will miss her…..

  4. Tracy, I’m so sorry that you’ve lost your Mom regardless of our age it’s hard to lose our Mother. She always helped us see what we could do to fix a problem and we always knew that Mom was always our cheerleader.
    I first got to know Nell at Paramount Terrace Christian Church in the Balcony People Sunday school class. She was always smiling and welcoming she showed and told that she was, indeed, a Child of God. I changed churches so I didn’t see Nell often but when I did it was always as if we just spoke ‘the other day’. I loved Nell and will miss her too.

  5. Nell was a wonderful woman and dear friend to many. As young women, a group of teachers began to play bridge together and Nell was part of the group. Always caring, laughing and a darn good bridge player. Thanking God for Nell and all the lives she touched. She is free and with God. No more pain.

    Much sympathy to the family and all who loved her.

  6. She taught my brother(1966) and myself(1970) at Rolling Hills. We both have very fond memories of Mrs. Patchin. She was the best!. Thoughts and prayers for the family.

  8. Nell and Terry Patchin lived across the street from us in Amarillo I. Gainsborough and were very close and dear friends of my parents, Darrell and JoAnne Truitt. So sad….I adored Nell. Rest In Peace, and sending much love to her family.

  9. Mrs Patchin taught my boys at Willow Vista Elementary School. The boys loved her dearly. She could tell some stories on my youngest. I think he could try her patience. Between Les and Jill McDonald they kept her hopping! We are surely losing a good teacher and lady!🙏🏻

  10. So hard to know Nell will not be here , But no doubt she is with her loved ones and her Jesus. I remember her beautiful geranium and her lovely house. Wish I had been around her more! Just a sweet woman.

  14. I knew Nell through our time together at Amarillo Christian Women’s Connection. She was a delight to know and very sweet and caring. May God comfort your family in this sudden loss.

  15. Nell was such a sweet and special person. I played bridge with her for quite a few years in our group of teachers. What fun we had! May the Lord comfort you and give you peace knowing that she is in her heavenly home.
