Betty Ruth Thomson Cosby, 90, of Amarillo, passed away Sunday, December 5, 2021.

Memorial services will be at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, December 8, 2021, in St. Stephen United Methodist Church.  Private family burial will be in Dreamland Cemetery.  Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Betty Ruth Thomson Cosby was born September 12, 1931 in Canyon, Texas, the youngest daughter of Reverend Hubert Thomson and Carmen Mathis Thomson.  Betty Ruth had a remarkable childhood in which God’s miraculous hand intervened no less than three times to save her life.  She graduated from Canyon High School in 1947 and then earned her degree in Elementary Education from West Texas State College in 1950.  While at West Texas she met Olin Cosby, the one love of her life, and they were married January 21, 1951.  They would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this last January.

If ever there was a calling for a person to be the “wind beneath the wings” of others, it was Betty.  She gave birth to five children whom, in complete partnership with her husband, she raised and nurtured in the Christian faith.  Literally, the church was her second home.  She was, in different seasons of her life, a “Preacher’s Daughter,” a “Preacher’s wife,” and a “Preacher’s mother.”  She took active leadership roles in the church as President of the Women’s Group, Church pianist, and director of the “Saints” choir.  She was a wonderful influence on all of her children and though she had a large family of five, she was able to relate to each one of them in special and individualized ways.

If the church was her second home, the school classroom was her third.  For many years she was a successful Kindergarten teacher, teaching in her last years at Avondale Elementary here in Amarillo. To the very end of her life, she saw herself as a teacher.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her three brothers, Glenn, Carlton, and James, and her sister, Earline.

She is survived by her two sons, Stan Cosby and wife Susan of Hedley, and Ron Cosby and wife Kim of Canyon; her three daughters, Sharla McClendon and husband Lance of Weatherford, Lisa Neinast and husband Jeff of Olton, and Lori Bailey and husband Bryan of Lake Tanglewood; 17 grandchildren, David Cosby, Carmen Cosby, Nanci Cosby, Tasha Finke, Taylor Cosby, Travis Cosby, Chris Wood, Heather Lopez, Zach Wood, Blake Neinast, Brittnee Street, Tanner Neinast, John Lee Dellis, Jadee Dellis, Jace Dellis, Alex Bailey, and Jack Bailey; 25 Great-Grandchildren; 6 ½ Great-Great-Grandchildren.

Memorials may be directed to Saint Stephen United Methodist Church, 4600 S. Western St. Amarillo, TX 79109 and the Running Water Draw Care Center, P. O. Box 409, Olton, TX 79064.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, December 7, 2021, at the funeral home.
