Alfred Nelson Green, Jr. (Al Green), a resident of Ussery Roan Texas State Veterans Home in Amarillo, passed from this life on February 4, 2021, at the age of 95.  No service has been planned.

Al was born in Wildorado, Texas, to Alfred Nelson Green and Floyce Atkins Green on June 28, 1925, the oldest of four children.  He attended school in Wildorado and after graduation volunteered for the Army Air Corp., where he taught aircraft gunnery during World War II years.  In 1946 Al met Mavis Whisenhunt, his future wife, and they married in Amarillo in 1947.  Al and Mavis later moved to Pampa, Texas, where they raised five children.

Al delivered bread to rural locations between Pampa, Shamrock & Wellington, Texas for many years.  In 1968 Al began work in Pampa for Cabot Corporation (later Ingersoll-Rand), retiring in 1988.  After retirement Al and Mavis moved back to Wildorado, initially living next door to Al’s widowed mother and continuing to live in Wildorado until they moved to Ussery Roan Texas State Veterans Home in Amarillo in 2019.

Al made many friends during his lifetime and received several awards for various community activities.  He was named Optimist of the Year in 1964 by the Optimist Club of Pampa, Texas for outstanding contribution to his community in his support of the Golden Gloves boxing program, coaching Little League Baseball for several years and umpiring many baseball games.  In 2009 Al was named Man of the Year by Oldham County Chamber of Commerce for outstanding performance and, nominated by Oldham County PCF Transportation, was Guest of Honor at an appreciation banquet where he received the Humana MarketPOINT Volunteer of the Year award.  In 2016 he was commended by the Palo Duro/Wildorado Cemetary Association in appreciation for his many years of faithful service.

Al is survived by Mavis, his wife of more than 73 years, his daughter Gail G. Lowe and previous son-in-law Melvin Lowe, both of Amarillo, son Alfred Nelson (Buzzy) Green and wife Sue of Gilmer, Texas, son-in-law Larry Goree of Boswell, Oklahoma, and sons Brad Green of Bremerton, Washington and Carey Neal Green and wife Mindi of Colorado.  Also surviving him are fifteen grandchildren, Teri Denton, Kasi Baklashev, Kurt Beck, Brandy Friesenborg, D.J. Loven, Nick Loven, Jeremy Green, Nathan Green, Kristen Green, Daniel Green, Aaron Green, Melinda De Liso Thomason, Madeline Green, Caleb Green, Faith Green, nineteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.  Al was preceded in death by his daughter Pamela Elaine Goree, parents Alfred and Floyce Green, brothers William (Bill) Green and Glen Green, and his sister Mary Louise Green.

  1. Buzzy, I am sure our Dads are now enjoying old stories of Optimist Club baseball and boxing, and probably some Cabot memories as well. He was a dear man. I wish you and your family much peace and comfort.

    I will always remember how kind and thoughtful your dad was to me. You and I shared many school activities of which your dad always supported, especially our Band programs in Junior High and High School. Just know that Sherry and I will be praying for you, Sue and your family during this difficult loss.

  3. Mavis I am so sorry for the loss of your loved one. Al was always so nice to visit with,I missed you both so much during this covid19 qornteen. May God be with you
