Sisay Zewde, a retiree of the City of Amarillo and long-time resident of Amarillo, TX, died unexpectedly on Sunday, August 1, 2021 at the age of 61.
Sisay was born in Shire, Ethiopia on October 12, 1959 to Giday Gebru and Silas Aregawi. He immigrated to the United States of America in 1990 after emigrating from Ethiopia in 1983 to Sudan, where he and his wife, Lemlem Berhe, spent 5 years. In 1990, he began his 25-year-career with the City of Amarillo.
Sisay was a devoted father and a handy-man. He enjoyed working on projects around the house, regular maintenance on his own and his friends’ vehicles, and everything in between. He was a problem-solver, never shied away from a challenge, and took joy in helping the new and young members of the Habesha Community in Amarillo, Texas. Sisay spoke 3 languages, Tigrinya, Amharic, and English, and was loved, trusted, and respected by those around him.
Sisay is survived by his wife, Lemlem Berhe (52), and his children, Daniel (30) and Samuiel (28). He is preceded in death by his grandfather, Gebru, his grandmother, Tsehaitu, his father, Giday, and his mother, Silas.
A memorial service is scheduled for 12pm on Saturday, August 7, 2021 at St. Mary’s Church, 211 N Forest St. Flowers, donations, and condolences may be offered at the service or by reaching out to any of his surviving family members.
