Wanda “June” Powell

Wanda “June” Powell of Fort Worth, TX died February 1, 2020.

Wanda “June” Powell who most of us knew as “Granny June” or “GG” was born February 1st, 1925, in a small town in Oklahoma, and spent most of her childhood in Wellington, Texas. She went home to be with the Lord, in the very early hours of Saturday morning, at the age of 95 (on her birthday), here in Fort Worth, Texas. She was in a family of 11 children, and lived through such times as the “Dust Bowl”, the “Great Depression”, and “World War II”. She spent some time out in California, but most of her life was spent up in the “Panhandle”, in Amarillo, Texas. She moved to Fort Worth, Texas in 2010 to be closer to family.

Granny June had 2 sons. Her oldest is Bruce Powell. Bruce was married to Susie, who went home to be with the Lord on November 30th, 2014. Their four children are Tiffany Maxwell, with her husband Jeff; Jennifer Oden, with her husband Kyle, Cindy Powell, and Jeffrey Powell, who went home to be with the Lord in 2012. Bruce currently resides in Van Alstyne, Texas with his wife Bobbie.

Her younger son is Donald Powell. Donald was married to Janet Powell, who went home to be with the Lord in 2006. Their 4 children are David, with his wife Ilia; Eric, with his wife Susie, Cris, with his wife Bridget, and Melodie, with her husband Dale. Don currently resides in Fort Worth, Texas with his wife Maribess.

Granny June had the difficult task of raising her two boys on her own, as a single mother, but she did that very well. She worked hard at a meat packing plant, doing a man’s work for half of a man’s salary. She worked her way through school and later became a nurse.

Most important of all, Granny June was a Christian. She knew the Lord Jesus Christ, she raised her boys to know Him, and she did her best to tell all her Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren, Great-Great Grandchildren and everyone she knew about Him.

Though our family is saddened by her passing, and will dearly miss her, yet we are encouraged and filled with joy that she is in the presence of Jesus, and all her pain is gone.

There will be a short Graveside Service at Memorial Park Cemetery in Amarillo, Texas on Tuesday, February 4th, at 1:00 PM. There will also be a Memorial Service at Castleberry Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas (1250 N Jim Wright Fwy), on Saturday, February 8th, at 1:00 PM.

  1. Oh, how I love my dear aunt June. She told me often that she was so ready to be with the Lord and other family who preceded her. I know she was in pain with arthritis and her pain is no more. May God bless each and every member of her family. Much love to my wonderful cousins (Bruce and Donnie) who loved and cared for their mother.
