Mary Lee Whitlow

 

Mary Lee Whitlow, 89, of Amarillo, Texas, passed away on September 27, 2021.  Celebration of Life services will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, October 2, 2021, in the Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel with the Reverend Greg Kinch of South Lawn Baptist Church officiating.  Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 6:00-7:00 PM on Friday, October 1, 2021, at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Mary Lee was born in Prairie Grove, AR on March 21, 1932, to Clyde and Florence (Cochran) Grant. She grew up in the Cane Hill area of Arkansas where she enjoyed playing on the high school basketball team. Shortly after her graduation in 1949, she moved to Amarillo, Texas.

She married Wayne Whitlow, with whom she shared 66 years of marriage, and together, they raised two boys, Michael and Randy.  Her favorite hobby was watching her boys compete in sports, especially basketball.

Mary Lee worked as a secretary for Hillcrest Baptist Church and later was employed by the Amarillo Southern Baptist Association, where she was a secretary for over 25 years. She enjoyed the camaraderie of her colleagues and supporting ministers in the area.  Mary Lee and Wayne were also instrumental in planting the Country Church at Amarillo College East Campus.  On the weekends, Mary Lee could be found watching sports and cheering on the Dallas Cowboys.

Mary Lee was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son Bradford Wayne; brothers J.C. and Robert Grant; and a sister, Shirley Cornett.

She is survived by her sons, Michael Whitlow and wife Denise of Castle Rock, CO, and Randy Whitlow and wife Sandy, of Amarillo, TX; brothers, Bo Grant of Fort Worth, TX and Roscoe Grant and wife Brenda, of Cresson, TX; grandchildren, Kyle Whitlow and wife Jessica, Stefanie Whitlow, Brandon Whitlow, Molly Whitlow, and Jenny Claire Woodard and husband Alden; two great-grandsons, Nova and Atlas Whitlow; and several nieces and nephews.
